President and Owner Roderick Mortimer & Dr. Meenakshi Whadwa, Curator of Meteoritics a the Field Muesum Chicago, IL -- When the Chicago Field Museum found out they were receiving one of the most highly advanced pieces of equipment to study the origins of our solar system, they called on Chicago-based Smooth Moves, Inc. to manage the move and installation of this five thousand pound Micromass IsoProbe Mass Spectrometer instrument.
Teaming up with NASA and the National Science Foundation, the Field Museum's new, state-of-the-art Isotope Geochemistry Laboratory was completed with the addition of this ultra-sensitive piece of scientific equipment at a cost of nearly a million dollars. This Mass Spectrometer will be used to analyze and date meteorites, the results of which will shed light on the sequence of events through which our solar system evolved from a cloud of gas and dust known as a nebulae.
Even the seemingly simple act of moving and installing the machine into the museum was a scientific exercise all its own. Entrusted with the job was Smooth Moves, Inc., a Chicago-based firm whose area of expertise is moving highly sensitive laboratory equipment. Says Roderick Mortimer, founder and President of Smooth Moves, Inc., "Each step of the process required exacting precision. We had been coordinating with the UK manufacturer and the museum scientists for months. The mass spectrometer had very special needs, for example, the unit could not be rolled across any floor seams. The slightest amount of jarring could damage it. We brought in special metal floor plates to provide a perfectly smooth surface." The move was a success and the museum was thrilled to be the first to install such a high-tech piece of equipment.
Smooth Moves regularly moves scientific and laboratory equipment for such other notable research facilities as the University of Chicago and Rush Presbyterian St. Luke's Hospital.
